The SAGHS UNESCO club raised funds to purchase items for a children’s home in Arima. This home is known as the Margaret Kristo home and it is based in the residential area of Tacarigua. The manager of this home is the elderly woman who began the home – Mrs. Margaret Kristo.

This home provides food, shelter and education for children within the age range of 4 to 18 years. Some of these children have been abandoned by their loved ones while others have fled their home to escape abuse and conflict.

The SAGHS UNESCO club decided to spread a little joy in the lives of these children as the Christmas season approached. Members of the club donated foodstuff, candy, clothes, shoes, games and stuffed animals to the home. The club decided to extend the time needed to collect donations in order to ensure that a substantial amount of items would be accumulated.

In early February the elegantly decorated packages arrived at the home’s doorstep in the wake of excited little shining eyes. The delivery of the packages was greatly appreciated by Mrs. Kristo who confided that the home currently houses 28 children. She stated that 6 teenagers are currently attending secondary school and trying their best to succeed despite the cruel labels attached to them by their classmates.

The home is in need of a functional washing machine and other household appliances. The UNESCO club has decided to attempt to raise funds to assist in the purchase of such items. The numerous children at the home are young and it is thus healthy for these children to have sufficient interaction with others. As such the girls have also discussed the idea of visiting these children and spending some time with them.

SAGHS is an ASPnet school. This network works in collaboration with the UNESCO club of Trinidad and Tobago. This year the members of the Club were invited to attend a ‘DigiArts’ workshop. This was designed to introduce two new softwares that UNESCO has developed to assist the members with the Digi Arts Project which requires extensive use of digital technology. For this project there is a tentative idea that some ASPnet schools would collaborate on the production of a play about HIV.

Members were recently invited to the welcome ceremony for the Norwegians who came from SALTDAL Upper Secondary School. This ceremony was featured in the newspaper. Members of the SAGHS UNESCO Club hope to be part of this exchange program.
